A Melbourne house with a garden designed by Chelsea Flower Show gold medallist Scott Wynd has hit the market, with its owners claiming the grounds alone would cost $1 million to replace.
The six-bedroom, three-bathroom house at 3 Obeah Court, Lysterfield in Melbourne’s south-east is heading to auction on October 24, with a price guide of $3.59 million.
Homeowners Markus and Susanna Koch bought the property 16 years ago and were drawn to the home’s six bedrooms and four separate living areas, which let their growing family spread out.

The gardens came next and the family enlisted Melbourne landscape architect Scott Wynd, who led the gold medal-winning Trailfinders Australian Garden at the 2010 Chelsea Flower Show.
Mr Wynd designed the family’s garden in 2012, planting about 700 bushes, shrubs and trees across the tiered grounds, with separate viewing areas, including one at the top of the garden.
At the heart of the backyard is the pool, set beside a large feature tree that’s lit at night and reflected in the water.
“We brought in a few landscape architects, but Scott had a vision and a unique way of working with the land,” Mr Koch said.
“It took nine months from design to completion, and then years to look like it does now.
“You couldn’t replicate it. It would cost $1 million to replace this garden now.”

Inside the expansive house, there are multiple well-appointed living and entertaining spaces.
There are feature sandstone walls that were built from stone quarried on the block itself, with a stonemason spending four weeks laying each piece by hand.
There are also two log fireplaces, a theatre, a study, a butler’s pantry and a kitchen that opens to the outdoor entertaining areas.

The kitchen comes with an oversized stone benchtop, glass splashback and quality appliances including a Smeg five-burner gas cooktop, Smeg double oven and Miele dishwasher.
A self-contained wing with its own entrance and garage provides extra room for extended family or older children.
Ray White Ferntree Gully agent Ben Thomas said it was a genuinely special home.

“You simply can’t buy a garden like this,” he said.
“It’s the work of a Chelsea gold medallist, and it’s had more than a decade to mature.
“Add the scale of the house, the self-contained wing and stone walls built from rock quarried on the site itself, and you have a property that would be almost impossible to recreate.”

Mr Thomas said the home’s location within the sought-after Carrington Estate within Lysterfield was another drawcard.
“Carrington is one of the most tightly held pockets in Melbourne’s east,” Mr Thomas said.
“The blocks are large, the estate is private, and once people move in, they tend to stay.”

The family of Formula One driver Oscar Piastri also counts among its residents, with Piastri’s father having moved to the estate.
“Buyers want space, privacy and security, but they don’t want to give up being close to the city,” Mr Thomas said.
“Lysterfield gives them all three, with the Dandenongs on the doorstep and the Monash Freeway minutes away.”
