Martin Perez has given this Braves team 121.0 important innings of reasonably well pitched and fortunate innings this season. It was far from a lock that he would make the roster and he was even DFA’d, but those innings have been very important to Atlanta’s current position. He hasn’t pitched like a 3.05 ERA pitcher, running a 4.18 FIP and a 4.25 xFIP, but those innings are banked at a 3.05 ERA rate if runs allowed. It’s valuable to appreciate the value of those innings to this team, highlighted by 5.2 innings of one run ball on six strikeouts Saturday.

Eric Longenhagen still believes in AJ Smith-Shawver as starter
At FanGraphs, Eric Longenhagen held a prospect chat yesterday (8/28/26) and got a question about Braves starter AJ Smith-Shawver’s ability to stick as a starter.
The link to the full chat is below, but here is Longenhagen’s thoughts:
I love him (Smith-Shawver), built and moves like a good starter, pitchers are constantly making adjustments and I see no reason why, after he was rushed and injured, he won’t successfully make some of his own.
