The layoffs continue at Corus Entertainment, with the company confirming another round of job cuts across Global News and its radio operations.

Corus has not stated how many roles will be affected at Global News and radio stations, but on Wednesday, a spokesperson for Corus confirmed the news of the layoffs with Broadcast Dialogue. The decision will impact positions at Global BC, Global National, and across its talk radio network, including 640 Toronto (CFIQ-AM).

The spokesperson stated, “As we continue to adapt to the evolving needs of our business, Corus has made a small number of changes in select markets, including roles at Global BC, Global National, News 640, and talk radio.”

“These changes are part of the difficult but necessary work to ensure our teams are structured in a sustainable way, while minimizing disruption to local news and audio delivery. We remain committed to supporting our news operations, and these changes do not reflect station closures or a retreat from our commitment to news. We continue to evolve our operating model so we can deliver trusted news to audiences across platforms as effectively as possible.”

Daily Hive has reached out to Corus for a statement.

News of the layoffs drew reactions from people on LinkedIn.

“Deeply sad and frustrating to see this trend continue,” wrote one commenter.

“I cannot believe what Corus staff are going through. I’ve just seen the future here for news in Saskatchewan and it ain’t pretty,” another stated.

“Gawd — when is it going to end? Global News and Corus talk radio staff being hit with more layoffs. The industry is slowly being destroyed — over 10 thousand media jobs cut in just the past five years,” wrote podcaster and radio and TV host Lynda Steele.

This week’s announcement comes roughly a month after a round of job cuts in July.

Canadian general trade union Unifor confirmed that 43 of its members were cut across the country. An estimated 28 positions were eliminated in Alberta, two in British Columbia, five in Winnipeg, two in Saskatoon, three in the Maritimes, and three in the Ontario region.

In September, 45 Global News employees in B.C. and Alberta lost their jobs, while in June 2024, Corus shut down the radio station 880 Edmonton.
