A year after a Miami community activist and business owner was fatally shot at his restaurant, an arrest has been made in his murder.
Jamar Lionel Jenkins, 39, was arrested Wednesday on a second-degree murder charge in the Oct. 10, 2025 shooting of Dwight Wells, an arrest report said.
Wells, 40, was shot and killed outside his restaurant, Winning and Won Turkey Legs on Northwest 17th Avenue.
According to an arrest report, Wells was playing dominoes outside the restaurant when the gunman walked up to him and shot him multiple times.

The suspect was wearing a face mask, a hoodie and gloves, the report said.
The report said investigators identified the suspect as Jenkins. He was booked into jail and remained behind bars without bond on Thursday, records showed.
Wells, also known as “Screamer,” was a pillar in the community by being a business owner and activist who advocated for the community’s youth.
His aunt told NBC6 that he started the Bikes Up, Guns Down movement.
Rodrigo De Paul scored on an assist from Lionel Messi and Germán Berterame added a goal to send reigning champion Inter Miami back to the MLS playoffs with a 2-0 win over New York City FC on Wednesday night.
Luis Suárez also assisted for Inter Miami, which has won back-to-back matches for the first time since July.
Miami missed the postseason when Messi arrived in 2023, but has reached the playoffs the past three seasons, losing in the first round to Atlanta United in 2024 then beating Vancouver last year to win the club’s first MLS Cup.
Wednesday’s victory came after Miami routed DC United 4-0 last Saturday on a pair of goals from Messi and Suárez, and it was the second league win for new coach Cristian “Kily” González, who took over Sept. 16.
Berterame scored in the 20th for his eighth goal of the season. De Paul doubled Miami’s lead right before the end of the first half. Dayne St. Clair denied Nicolás Fernández on a penalty in the final minute of the match for his second straight clean sheet.
It has been a rollercoaster year for Messi, who led Argentina to its second straight World Cup final and announced his retirement from international soccer a month later. Now, he has a chance to cap it with another trophy.

The state of Florida won a key court decision Wednesday that allows it to enforce a ban on social media accounts for kids under 14 and other restrictions.
The law was one of the most restrictive in the U.S. on social media use by children when Gov. Ron DeSantis signed it in 2024.
The law implicates the First Amendment, an appeals court said, but “likely does so in a content-neutral manner.”
It would likely survive a full legal challenge “because it doesn’t burden substantially more speech than necessary to advance the important interest in protecting minors from social media addiction,” a panel from the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said in a 3-0 opinion.
The law bans social media accounts for Florida children under 14 and requires parental consent for use by kids who are 14 or 15.
Industry trade groups the Computer & Communications Industry Association and NetChoice sued Florida, arguing that the law violated the free-speech rights of social media providers and users. A judge in 2025 said the law likely was unconstitutional and granted an injunction.
That injunction was put on hold while the appeals court heard the case. The lawsuit, with the injunction now overturned, will return to federal court in Tallahassee.
The appeals court noted that the law covers social media platforms “that have been determined to induce heavy use by children, and applies only to platforms that use both algorithms and one of several addictive features.”
An email seeking comment from the Florida attorney general’s office was not immediately answered. NetChoice said it was disappointed with the decision.
“We are currently evaluating all of our options as we continue the fight to ensure Floridians’ rights to free expression online are protected, and parents remain in the driver’s seat when it comes to making decisions for their families,” said Paul Taske, a lawyer at NetChoice.
A suspect has been arrested in connection with a series of crimes that included an abduction and shootout in North Miami in which people were caught on camera jumping out of an apartment window along with a murder and car arson in southwest Miami-Dade, authorities said.
Devorise Carl Johnson, 21, is facing charges including first-degree murder/kidnapping, attempted murder, aggravated battery, shooting a deadly missile, armed burglary, armed robbery and falsely impersonating an officer, Miami-Dade jail records showed.
According to an arrest report and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the incident unfolded the night of Oct. 3 when Johnson and four other males arrived at the Aliro Apartments at 14040 Biscayne Boulevard and waited for a victim to leave the building.

When the victim, identified by authorities as 22-year-old Eddrick Bethune, exited, Johnson and the other males drove up in a Toyota Camry with blue and red flashing lights, the report said.
Two suspect got out armed and wearing shirts with the word Police on the back and handcuffed Bethune before taking his keys and throwing his phone across the parking lot, the report said.
Johnson and two other suspects entered Bethune’s apartment using his keys and encountered a second victim, who armed himself with an AK-47 style weapon, the report said.
The second victim and Johnson exchanged fire, and Johnson was struck multiple times, authorities said.
With no avenue for escape, Johnson and the other two suspects were forced to jump from a third-story bedroom window, the report said.
Cellphone video captured by a neighbor showed the men jumping out of the window and falling several stories, with one suspect appearing to drop cash as he fled.

Meanwhile, Bethune was forcefully placed into the Camry as Johnson and the other suspects ran back to the vehicle to flee, the report said.
Johnson was later dropped off at Jackson North Medical Center for treatment.
The rest of the suspects in the Camry then drove to the area of Southwest 216th Street and Southwest 189th Avenue, where Bethune was shot multiple times, the report said.

At around 7:25 a.m. the next day, a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office captain discovered Bethune’s body lying on the shoulder of the roadway.
Investigators later found the Camry in the area of Southwest 248th Street and 157th Avenue, and discovered it had been intentionally set on fire after the murder of Bethune, authorities said.
A victim in a crime spree that involved a shooting, a kidnapping and an arson that spanned from North Miami to Homestead has been identified.
Johnson was released from the hospital on Wednesday and was taken into custody before he was booked into jail. Attorney information wasn’t available.
Officials haven’t said whether any of the other suspects have been identified or arrested but said the incident remains under investigation.
Federal prosecutors on Wednesday urged a New York judge to send two of the nation’s most successful luxury real estate brokers and their brother to prison for life for drugging and raping dozens of women over a two-decade stretch, while defense lawyers recommended 15-year terms.
The lengthy written submissions by both sides precede the sentencing later this month of twins Oren and Alon Alexander, 39, and Tal Alexander, 40.
The brothers were convicted in March of multiple charges including sex trafficking, which carries a mandatory minimum penalty of 15 years in prison.
“As the evidence makes clear, the defendants are serial rapists who violated woman after woman and girl after girl for years upon years,” prosecutors wrote. They said they had identified at least 70 victims who were raped or sexually assaulted by at least one of the defendants.
Defense lawyers said the brothers apologize to the women they insulted or offended for conduct they admit was “insensitive toward the feelings of certain women at certain times,” but they added that all three “steadfastly maintain their complete innocence of these awful charges.”
Oren and Tal Alexander, once known as real estate’s “A Team” for their high-ticket sales and celebrity clientele, face sentencing Oct. 27 along with Alon Alexander, who ran their family’s private security company.

Prosecutors said the brothers began sexually assaulting women as early as 2001 or 2002, when they were in high school. As the years passed, the government said, they developed a pattern of drugging and raping women who they enticed to join them on luxury getaways.
“The defendants felt empowered to take whatever they wanted from any woman or girl who agreed to get on a plane, go to a party, or sit at their table at a nightclub,” prosecutors said.
Once sexual assaults began, the brothers “seemed to prefer — when the women protested, struggled to get free, or lay lifeless in front of them,” prosecutors said.
Eleven women testified at their trial, with many of them describing being raped or sexually assaulted after they became disoriented and lost control of their bodies after being given a drink by one of the brothers.
Prosecutors noted that the Probation Office has recommended that each defendant serve 15 years for each victim they raped, which would result in 180-year sentences for Alon and Tal Alexander and 195 years in prison for Oren Alexander.
Defense lawyers described the brothers as “dedicated husbands and fathers” and said they had all lived “lives very different than what was portrayed at trial” for years prior to their 2024 arrests. They have been jailed ever since.
The defense submission projected confidence that the brothers will do well on appeal, saying the evidence was “remarkably weak” on critical points and that the men faced “overwhelming prejudice” as a result of Judge Valerie E. Caproni’s decisions about what evidence the jury saw.
“We fight against injustice,” they wrote.
The lawyers also urged Caproni to see the brothers as “human beings, not the monsters falsely portrayed in Court and in the media.”
