Photo: Office of the Mayor/Mayor Eric Adams/X From the opening of the Queens-Midtown Tunnel in 1940 until it was swamped during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, it had never flooded. The storm damage to the tube was “unprecedented,” an MTA engineer told the trade journal Tunnel Business Magazine, and the agency had to close the tunnel for ten days. In the subsequent months, it saw major repairs, and the state installed big swinging doors at the ends to close it against the next storm surge. Which works great until some jabroni drills a hole through the roof. Yesterday afternoon, a contractor…
As a mom of 11, buying food for 13 people can get expensive. If I’m not careful, my grocery bills can easily creep to $2,000 a month, which is way more than the $1,200 I have budgeted. Start by making a meal plan and breaking down what ingredients you’ll need for itBefore I set foot in a grocery store, I plan what I’m going to cook in the coming days or weeks. This way, I know that every ingredient I add to my cart has a purpose. When you know you’ll use everything you buy, you save money and also prevent waste. Bring…

U.S. crude oil rallied 2% on Thursday to trade above $70 per barrel, as OPEC+ delays plans to boost production after prices tumbled this week. OPEC+ members have delayed a production hike of 180,000 barrels per day by two months, two sources told CNBC. Kwekwe, Zimbabwe – Dorothy Moyo says a prayer every time she walks, runs or drives around her neighbourhood in central Zimbabwe – afraid that the earth will give away from beneath her feet, dragging her underground. The 36-year-old’s fear is not uncommon among the hundreds of families living in the Globe and Phoenix community, a mining compound in Kwekwe, more than 200km (125 miles) from the capital Harare. Last year, on an afternoon in mid-May, Moyo had visited the local school – Globe and Phoenix Primary – to check on her daughter and get an appraisal from the teacher when…

Housing markets across the country have stalled due to elevated mortgage rates and limited for-sale inventory, but some counties are at risk of a more dramatic downturn. That’s according to a report released Thursday by Attom, which concluded that areas around New York City, Chicago and inland California are most at risk of a housing downturn, while areas in the South and Midwest are less vulnerable. “The housing market boom continues to gain momentum, thanks to another [seasonal] boost,” Attom CEO Rob Barber said in a statement. “However, some markets show signs of potential instability, which suggests a mixed level…
I pulled my 3-year-old from in-person preschool a few years ago. I couldn’t let a place of learning implant visions of violence in a child so young she didn’t even know the word.My daughter is sensitive. I knew she’d be negatively affected by shooter-response drills, and she already felt anxious at school, a new environment for her. If she was afraid, she wouldn’t be able to absorb what she was there to learn, whether that was letters, numbers, or how to listen during lockdowns.I didn’t want to normalize violence for herI was hesitant to withdraw her from public school so…
