President-elect Donald Trump announced late Friday that he has chosen Scott Turner, the former executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council (WHORC), to serve as the next secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in his administration. Scott Turner Turner, an ally of the president-elect and member of the America First Policy Institute, is a former professional football player and Texas state representative for part of Collin County and Rockwall County, from 2013-2017. He played for the National Football League (NFL) for nine seasons prior to entering politics for teams including the former…
The black-and-white-striped bedroom, as shown in listing photos, features some of the bolder design choices in the Pierre apartment. Photo: Sothebys International Realty A two-bedroom apartment at the Pierre, with outré interiors designed by King Charles’s cousin and a former Bond girl, is back on the market, asking half of what it originally listed for in 2019. The seller, who once tried for $17 million, chopped the asking price to $8.775 million last March before pulling it off the market in October. (“Best-priced high floor corner facing the park. Priced to sell,” per the listing at the time.) It’s now…

The reverse mortgage industry has been anticipating the development of a new, complementary Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM)-backed Securities (HMBS) program designed to further address liquidity issues in the aftermath of the collapse of a major lender and issuer. But following the results of the 2024 presidential election, the implementation of “HMBS 2.0” and other potential priorities sought by current leaders could be in flux through no fault of Ginnie Mae, the government-owned company that oversees the forward and reverse mortgage-backed securities programs. There are also other in-development policies in other areas of the government to consider. Ginnie Mae shakeup…
As the U.S. housing market slowed down in the third quarter due to rising home prices and higher mortgage rates, investor purchases also ramped down, according to a new report by Redfin. The Seattle-based brokerage found that real estate investor purchases dropped by 2.3% year over year in Q3 2024, representing a small change after four years of fluctuations. The report is based on an analysis of home purchase records from 39 of the most populous metro areas since 2000. According to Redfin, an investor is “any institution or business that purchases residential real estate,” which includes both institutional and…

It’s slow. It’s hard. Being distracted, on the other hand, is easy. Checking my phone after it buzzes? That is easy. And even if it’s just another spam text from someone looking for…
In recent years, renting has become increasingly expensive, particularly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. While national rent growth has cooled compared to the double-digit surges of recent years, it remains consistent with pre-pandemic levels. In November 2023, CoreLogic reported a 2.7% annualized increase in U.S. single-family rents. But the narrative is more complex in niche markets like the Texas capital of Austin. Social media posts have fueled speculation that Austin’s rental market is in freefall. Nick Gerli, CEO of Reventure App, claims the city’s median apartment rent has dropped 15% over the past two years. He cites high…

Plaintiffs Douglas Hardy, Glenn Champion and Dylan Tent on Thursday filed an amended complaint in their antitrust suit against the National Association of Realtors (NAR) in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The plaintiffs take issue with what they claim is a requirement for agents and brokers — in Michigan and nationally — to be members of NAR, their state Realtor association and a local Realtor association in order to gain access to the MLS. The three plaintiffs are real estate professionals. Hardy is the owner of Snyder Kinney Bennett and Keating LLC, which does business in southeast…
Photo-Illustration: Curbed; Photos: Getty, Google Earth My delusions of homeownership in Rockaway began, in earnest, with a 100-year-old Victorian. I had seen the “For Sale” sign zip-tied to its chain-link fence while on a walk with my dog one afternoon. The fig tree out front was fruiting, and the house was a block and a half from the ocean. It was my Under the Tuscan Sun dream, except in better shape and in Queens. A few weeks later, a broker was walking me through the home’s three stories of original parquet floors and stained-glass detailing, using words like entertainer’s kitchen and…
